designing for improv, rules of engagement, LLM
In the most literal sense, the first thought that came to mind was freestyle rap battles. Frank, you may have to get used to hearing about hip hop culture from me because that is my forte. I try to relate everything back to rap music. The culture of backpack freestyle rap are generally speaking, two artists that get together in front of an audience and are supposed to generate lyrics spontaneously slandering the other artist. Of course you will get many rappers arming themselves with what is called “pre-writtens” which of course negates the concept of freestyle. Within this battle, rappers are called to address their opponents wardrobe, family members and lack of sexual prowess. In essence, these artists work within the constraints of their environment and yet have the complete freedom to choose which events, piece of clothing or even a lyric their opponent used (this is called flippin’ the script) to their arsenal of words. In application to the reading, just because you set constraints doesn’t mean that improvisation cannot happen. Even with constraints set, you are able to direct an outcome that can still yield an endless combination. An example would be one of those combo locks. You can have so many different outcomes with the limitations of numbers alone (0-35 for that matter). Imagine if these combo locks has a higher number count like (0-100) or even letters in the mix. On a side note: the winner of the battle is chosen either by a panel of judges (freestyle veterans usually) or decibal of noise from the crowd sans booing (this however can be quite deceiving as in the past, battlers have brought their entourages with them). The following example showcases a rap battle translated.
Although, within these rap battles all you can take away as a participating audience member are some good chuckles and those will be memories. I think for project 1, that participants are able to take something away or create ownership. The YES, NO, MAYBE prints definitely exemplify this as the print is what the participant is able to own after everything is said and done. Creating a unique user experience instead of just looking would be my hope. Its about engaging the participant to be active and taking it a step further than making simple observations.
@#$#Q%$# - I wrote a whole paragraph about LLM and tumblr did not save changes.
Ok, maybe this time it will be more concise. LLM, was an interesting read as it talked about how someone wanted to get to know Laura better but didn’t really know her until Laura was prompted to write her lifestyle for this website LTLYM which engages participants by giving them an assignment to complete (this being the constraint) and yet no submissions from participants were ever identical. I believe this is the design challenge I have been given is to find some way to engage participants to be actively observing as opposed to passively and creating ownership.
